Jon Koonce and One More Mile
[FOLK] Last year, local singer-songwriter Jon Koonce released his fourth album, It Can Never Happen Here, to little fanfare. Its tough songwriting and crisp instrumentation, though, have made the work a slow-growing standout among recent local-folkie releases. Koonce's indignant political stance on songs like the title track and "Rich Man's War" (an original, not the Steve Earle tune) invests the album with a particular urgency, though even when he's tackling personal issues instead, his gritty voice and plainspoken lyrics lend gravitas. Koonce is an overlooked talent deserving wider exposure in Portland and well beyond. JEFF ROSENBERG. 8 pm. McMenamins Rock Creek Tavern, 10000 Old Cornelius Pass Road., 645-3822. Free. All ages.
